Introduction of Haitian Corner (Raoul Peck) at BFI Southbank.
As part of BFI Big Screen Classics strand, I was invited to introduce Raoul Peck’s first feature film Haitian Corner at BFI Southbank. The screening is part of the programme named ‘Cinema of Duty’, programmed by Xavier Pillai.
The programme considered how Black filmmakers have utilised the concept of ‘duty’ to unearth ‘buried histories’ and challenge a hostile film industry through corrective representation. The programme refers to the documentary-realist era of 1960s Black British Cinema called the ‘cinema of duty’, and explores global Black cinema to provide critical response.
